The Yellow-naped Amazon, also known as the Yellow-naped Parrot is native to Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It is about 36 cm (14 in) long with a wingspan of 20 cm (8 in). It gets its name from the yellow band across the back of its neck.

These birds prefer woodland and forest habitats where they eat fruits, nuts, berries and seeds.

They are cavity nesters. The female lays 3 or 4 eggs and the male guards the nest from outside. During the incubation period the male feeds the female by regurgitating food for her. They mature at two years of age.

In the wild they live 20 – 30 years.

Fun Facts

Their populations have declined largely due to collecting for the pet trade. As a result, they are listed in CITES Appendix 1 which prohibits the sale of captured birds.
