Nilgai
The Nilgai, also known as the Blue Bull is the largest antelope in Asia. It is endemic to India, Nepal and Pakistan. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism. Males can weigh up to 288 kg (635 lbs) and stand 1 – 1.5 m (3.3 – 5 ft) at the shoulder. Females weigh up to 213 kg (470 lb). Only the males carry smooth, straight horns.



The sexes differ in colour. Males are bluish grey while females and young animals are orange to tawny.



They are herbivores, eating mainly grasses and Herbs. Nilgai prefer areas of short bushes and scattered trees or grasslands. They travel in three distinct groupings; one or two females with calves, three to six adult and yearling females with calves, or two to eighteen males.

Nilgai were introduced to a large ranch in Texas in the 1920’s. Animals spread from there to become a feral population.
Today there are an estimated 37 000 wild Nilgai in Texas as well as populations in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.
Nilgai can cause considerable damage to crops in areas where they exist in large numbers in India.
