Red Panda
The Red Panda, also known as the Lesser Panda is found in temperate forests in the eastern Himalayas and southern China. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat. It is arboreal, territorial and solitary except during the mating season.

This animal lives mainly on bamboo but also eats eggs, birds, small mammals and insects. They are active from dusk to dawn.

There are two subspecies and it is estimated there are less than 10 000 across their range. Though classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List they are threatened by poaching, loss of habitat through deforestation, inbreeeding and competition with livestock for food.

did you know?

Like the Giant Panda the Red Panda has a “false thumb” which is an extension of a wrist bone that allows it to strip leaves from bamboo shoots.
Despite consuming large amounts of bamboo in its diet, like the Giant Panda, the Red Panda cannot digest cellulose.
As a result much of this food passes rapidly through its digestive system without providing real nutrition.
